Keeping South Africa’s largest retailer moving
In high-tempo retail logistics, an idle truck directly impacts the bottom line. As Shoprite rapidly expanded across South Africa, keeping delivery schedules on track while managing fleet damage and repair costs became a critical priority. Traditional, reactive repair models were simply too slow to support the pace of national growth, creating operational bottlenecks and expanding repair expenses.

At Zenzele Truck Bodies we have pioneered an embedded onsite model, beginning at Shoprite’s Verulam Depot in Durban. By integrating dedicated technicians directly into the client’s daily workflow, we have aligned its operations with Shoprite’s schedules to catch issues before they caused delays.
Embedded onsite care and preventative maintenance
- Integrated daily workflows: Technicians conduct daily inspections and handle repairs ranging from door maintenance and roadworthy checks to medium-sized loadbody fixes right on location. Daily fleet checks prioritise continuous proactive health over reactive repairs.
- Data and Tracking Systems: We have shifted the focus from reactive repairs to proactive fleet health. Custom reporting systems track breakdown trends, help schedule routine jobs, and identify vehicles approaching end-of-life. Damage and vehicle concerns are reported directly to the client's maintenance team in real time.
- Minimised operational friction: Onsite teams coordinate closely with maintenance managers, internal service crews, and third-party providers to execute repairs during natural operational lulls.
- Regional support hubs: Heavy accident repairs and large-scale overhauls are routed to our offsite regional repair centres, leaving the onsite team free to remain a high-volume, quick-turnaround unit.
From one depot to a national footprint
Beyond functionality, the brief called for a true showpiece. The Zenzele Truck Bodies team custom-designed and manufactured a stainless-steel front grill featuring the Checkers 60Sixty logo, engineered to preserve exact airflow to the engine. We added custom stainless-steel hubcaps, decorative bulkhead exhaust pipes, and fitted side skirts, wheel arches, and aerokits, all while ensuring the vehicle remains service and repair friendly.
With final touches added, including branded teal walls, lighting, lightbox feature panels, and an internal slushie machine, the build came together as a true statement piece on the road and across social media.
